The Power of Reading Nooks—Creating Spaces That Inspire Young Minds

Writer: Jasmine BrownJasmine Brown

As an author and educator, I believe that every child deserves access to books and spaces that encourage curiosity, imagination, and lifelong learning.

Kids reading in a reading nook

That’s why I recently transformed a reading nook at my daycare—because the right environment can make all the difference in a child’s relationship with books.

Why reading spaces matter

A cozy, inviting reading nook isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space where children feel comfortable, engaged, and excited to explore new stories. When kids have a dedicated area for reading, they are more likely to develop a love for books, build their vocabulary, and strengthen comprehension skills—all essential tools for future success.

Books aren’t just for entertainment; they’re powerful teaching tools. That’s why I created my Money Lessons with Dad series—to introduce children to financial literacy in a fun and relatable way. Stories help young readers grasp important money concepts, like saving, spending, and the value of a dollar, in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. Placing my books front and center in the new reading nook reinforces the idea that financial education can start early and be part of everyday learning.

A reading nook for kids transformation

When I set out to create a special reading space, I wanted it to feel warm, inviting, and accessible to all the kids in my daycare. I added comfortable seating, bright colors, and a variety of books that reflect different cultures, experiences, and important life lessons. Seeing the kids gravitate toward the nook and get excited about reading has been the most rewarding part of this transformation!

How you can create your own reading nook

Whether you’re a parent, educator, or childcare provider, setting up a simple reading space can have a big impact. Here are a few tips:

  • Choose a cozy corner – A small, quiet space with good lighting makes a huge difference.

  • Make books accessible – Low shelves or baskets allow kids to grab books easily.

  • Incorporate variety – Include books that teach valuable lessons, whether about money, emotions, or adventure.

  • Add comfortable seating – Pillows, bean bags, or rugs make the space inviting.

A space for learning and growth

At the heart of this transformation is my mission to empower children—not just with financial literacy but with a love for learning that will serve them for a lifetime. Whether they’re reading Jasmine’s First Piggy Bank or diving into another adventure, I hope this space nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
